How to Safely Load and Secure Equipment on a Flatbed Trailer

Transporting equipment like tractors, skid steers, or utility vehicles requires more than just a flatbed—it demands a safe, strategic loading process. Here’s how to do it right:

1. Choose the Right Flatbed

Make sure the trailer can handle the total weight of your equipment. Our team can help match you to the right size and capacity for your load.

2. Position for a Safe Approach

Use level ground and a straight alignment when backing up to load. Deploy ramps fully and check they’re secured to the trailer deck.

3. Drive or Winch Slowly and Evenly

Use a winch if your equipment isn’t running. For powered units, drive slowly and straight up the ramps, with a spotter if needed.

4. Load Forward and Centered

Place the majority of the weight toward the front of the trailer, ideally 60% in front of the axles. Poor balance can cause swaying or jackknifing.

5. Secure with Heavy-Duty Tie-Downs

Use ratchet straps or chains rated for the weight of your load. Tie down all four corners—no exceptions. Add additional straps for attachments or implements.

6. Double-Check Everything

After your first few miles, pull over and re-tighten all straps and inspect your hitch. Settling may occur during transport.
