Weight Ratings, Load Limits & GVWR: A Quick Guide for Safe Hauling

Understanding trailer weight ratings is critical when renting a trailer. Whether it’s a dump trailer, flatbed, or gooseneck, overloading can lead to breakdowns, fines, or worse. At BIGGS Trailers, we help every customer understand how much they can safely haul.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating):

This is the maximum combined weight of the trailer and everything on it. For example, if a trailer’s GVWR is 14,000 lbs and it weighs 4,000 lbs empty, your payload capacity is 10,000 lbs.

2. Payload Capacity:

This is how much you can legally and safely load into the trailer. Always subtract the empty trailer weight from the GVWR.

3. Tongue Weight:

This is the downward force the trailer applies to your vehicle’s hitch. A safe range is 10–15% of the total trailer weight. Too much or too little tongue weight can cause sway or loss of control.

4. Axle Ratings:

Each axle is rated independently. A tandem trailer with two 7,000 lb axles typically has a 14,000 lb GVWR—but that rating can’t be exceeded across the whole load.
